The Defregger Gasse in Villanders

Villanders may be a small mountain village in South Tyrol, but it is still a gem steeped in history that is definitely one of the special sights to see on a holiday in South Tyrol. Narrow alleyways and two Gothic towers characterise the village centre. The Defregger Gasse is particularly noteworthy. Franz Defregger, the well-known Austro-Bavarian history painter, university lecturer and representative of the Munich School, used the unmistakable village centre of Villanders as the backdrop for his most famous work: "The Last Squad".
